Former Arsenal star Granit Xhaka has criticised English referee Michael Oliver following Bayer Leverkusen’s defeat to Bayern Munich.
Harry Kane’s two goals and a lucky strike from Jamal Musiala, assisted by Leverkusen goalkeeper Matej Kovar, gave Vincent Kompany’s side a huge advantage ahead of next week’s return leg.
Harry Kane opened the scoring with a superb header in the ninth minute, then converted a penalty in the 75th minute to double their lead. After consulting VAR, English referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot, judging that Edmond Tapsoba had fouled Kane in the box.

Former Arsenal star Granit Xhaka felt Oliver was at fault for a decision he would never have awarded in the Premier League. He said: “If it was a Premier League game, Michael Oliver would not have given the penalty.
I was there for seven years and I know Michael. I believe he would not have given the penalty in the Premier League. There are a lot of these situations in the Premier League and referees don’t give penalties very often. It’s disappointing that he gives a penalty at this level and it can decide the game. If you give a penalty for every save, there would be a lot of penalties in every game.”
Speaking after the match, Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso believes his side will need to produce a comeback like Liverpool did against AC Milan in the final 20 years ago to progress.
