Female tennis players on maternity leave will receive benefits

The Women’s Professional Tennis Association has taken practical action to support female players in its system.

A joint initiative between the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the WTA to support female tennis players with paid maternity leave.

The Maternity Fund program will provide benefits to more than 320 eligible female tennis players. For the first time, female tennis players will be entitled to up to 12 months of paid maternity leave and access to other benefits.

Female players will have to compete in a set number of WTA tournaments to qualify for the allowances. Belinda Bencic, who won the Tokyo Olympic gold medal and recently returned to WTA competition, welcomed the initiative.

There are now many mothers on the tour, which allows female players to pursue both their careers and their aspirations of starting a family.
