Ahead of the 2025 Indian Wells Masters, Carlos Alcaraz encountered some difficulties when the court surface at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in the US changed.
The 2025 Indian Wells Masters saw a turning point when the organizers decided to change the court surface supplier from Plexipave to Laykold, which is the material used at the Miami Open and US Open.
According to many experts, Laykold makes the Indian Wells court faster, the ball bounces lower, changing the game significantly. Alcaraz won the 2022 US Open on Laykold, but this does not mean that the Spanish star is familiar with this court.

Alcaraz spoke out about the change and did not hide his concern: “I really do not understand this decision. For the past 25 years, the tournament has used the same type of court, but this time it has changed. I do not know the reason, but it is certainly a surprise.”
However, the world number three is still determined to compete in this year’s tournament: “Although the court is faster, I believe I can adapt. The important thing is to get used to the competition conditions as quickly as possible.”
Carlos Alcaraz starts the Indian Wells Masters in the second round with a match against the winner of the Quentin Halys – Pablo Carreno Busta match on March 8. The next potential opponents for the Spanish star are Denis Shapovalov (round 3), Grigor Dimitrov (round 4), Djokovic (quarter-finals), Taylor Fritz or Andrey Rublev (semi-finals) and Medvedev or Zverev (final).
The first two months of 2025 did not go smoothly for Alcaraz, as he lost to Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. The Spanish star also stopped in the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open when he lost to Jiri Lehecka.
