According to the AP news agency, Las Vegas Raiders forward Henry Ruggs III was taken from the hospital straight to a Las Vegas jail to prepare for his first court appearance on November 3 on multiple charges following a horrific car accident on the morning of November 2 that left one person dead and two others injured (including him).
Ruggs, 22, and his girlfriend were hospitalized after a horrific crash in which the Chevrolet Corvette he was driving slammed into a Toyota Rav4 on a busy residential road a few miles west of the Las Vegas Strip around 3:40 a.m. on Nov. 2.
Police said Ruggs was driving at a “high rate of speed” on a three-lane road, staying in the middle lane. He then crossed into the far right lane and hit the rear of the Toyota Rav4.
Ruggs and his girlfriend’s injuries were not considered life-threatening. However, the Toyota he crashed into caught fire, and the woman driving it and her dog died. The woman’s identity has not been released.
According to court records, Ruggs faces charges of DUI resulting in death and reckless driving.
Clark County Prosecutor Steve Wolfson has not yet responded to the charges. He said he is aware of the accident and will await the results of the police investigation.
Under Nevada law, a conviction for DUI resulting in death carries a sentence of 2-20 years in prison. The penalty for reckless driving is 1-6 years in prison.
Ruggs’ attorneys, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld, said they are also representing him as part of the investigation into the crash.
Chesnoff declined further comment after Ruggs was released from the hospital and taken to the Clark County Detention Center.
The Las Vegas Raiders said in a statement: “We are ‘devastated by the loss of life’ and are ‘in the process of gathering information.’ The club extends its deepest condolences and prayers to the family of the victim, and says it will have no further comment at this time.
