Tomas Machac: Czech tennis player wins first ATP title at Mexican Open

The 24-year-old Czech tennis player – Tomas Machac – won the first ATP Tour title of his career when he was crowned at the Mexican Open 2025, with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (Spain, ATP rank 48).

As the No. 8 seed of the tournament, Machac overcame many names such as Alexander Zverev (Germany, world No. 2, No. 1 seed), Leaner Tien (young American player of Vietnamese origin), before becoming the third Czech player to win the tournament, also known as Abierto Mexicano Telcel, after Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek.

The player who won the gold medal in the mixed doubles event at the 2024 Paris Olympics excitedly shared: “It feels great. The current feeling is simply relief. Because, it has been a very difficult week.”

“Especially, when I have this kind of form, I don’t want to lose the final match. I am really happy to have won today, because Alejandro played really, really well.”

“The match was a very difficult battle. I think I served very well today. I think if it wasn’t for that, today’s match wouldn’t have been just two sets,” Machac shared.

During the 1 hour and 38 minute match, Machac served very well, hitting 11 “aces”, and achieved a 95% point winning rate when holding the first serve (winning 35/37 points). He also faced only one break risk but successfully defended it.

After the victory, which will help him enter the world’s Top 20 when the ATP releases the updated scoreboard tomorrow, Monday 3-3-2025, Machac thanked his coach, Daniel Vacek, for helping him stay calm throughout the tense match.

“Sometimes I was very difficult with him, I raised my voice at him during the matches. But I talked to him 2 weeks ago. That is, sometimes I have difficulties in big and important matches.

“I don’t know how to handle these situations, but then he helped me win… I think we will try to communicate more in the future,” Machac explained.

Machac is currently the number 1 male tennis player in the Czech Republic, the new hope of tennis in this country. Last summer, he and his girlfriend Katerina Siniakova won the mixed doubles gold medal (this was Siniakova’s second Olympic gold medal). However, by the end of 2024, the couple had broken up…
