Slap fighting is a controversial sport because athletes are not allowed to defend themselves.

LAS VEGAS — Power Slap, the new combat sports project backed by UFC boss Dana White and business chief Hunter Campbell, made its U.S. television debut Wednesday with two shows: “The Road to the Title,” which aired on TBS, and “After Slap,” a post-event segment reviewing the week’s action.

Slap fighting is not without controversy.

Artur Walczak, a 46-year-old former bodybuilder, collapsed to the ground after being knocked unconscious during a slapping contest in Poland two years ago. He suffered a brain hemorrhage and later died.

At a meeting of the Nevada State Athletic Commission that Insider attended in November, commissioner Stephen Cloobeck asked Campbell and Power Slap Chairman Frank Lamicella to ensure that there would be no fatalities at Power Slap.

Campbell told Cloobeck that it was priority number one, two, three, and counting to 10 in his response, Insider reported at the time. The commission approved the spanking for management.

Power Slap aired its first episode of the reality series on Wednesday.
